Portuguese and German authorities have resumed searches in Portugal for Madeleine McCann, nearly 18 years after the British toddler vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Algarve. The ongoing investigation continues to focus on disused buildings and wells across a 21-square-kilometer area near where Madeleine was last seen.
Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared on May 3, 2007, sparking one of the most high-profile missing persons cases in Europe. The search covers the municipality of Lagos, near Praia da Luz, and specifically targets locations between the Ocean Club resort where Madeleine and her family stayed, and the nearby residence of the case’s prime suspect.
Prime Suspect and Investigation History
Since 2020, German investigators have led the inquiry, naming Christian Brückner, a 48-year-old German national, as their primary suspect. Brückner is currently serving a sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal. His scheduled release is September 2025 but could be delayed if he fails to pay a fine.
Brückner lived in the Algarve region between 2000 and 2017, and investigators have uncovered photographs and videos placing him near key search locations. German police suspect him of murder but have not yet filed new charges. British authorities continue to treat the case as a missing persons investigation.
Current Search Operation
The search, ongoing through Friday, involves multiple agencies, including Portuguese firefighters who have drained wells, and German police working under a European warrant that permits searches on private land. Roads around the search sites, mostly scrubland approximately 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club resort, have been closed since Monday to facilitate the operation.
Authorities have not confirmed whether this latest search is prompted by new evidence but appear to be conducting thorough sweeps of potential hiding spots for evidence or remains. Portuguese prosecutors have approved German requests for the searches, and any findings will be shared with German investigators.
Ongoing International Cooperation
The Metropolitan Police in the UK, leading the long-running Operation Grange since 2011, remain involved and have acknowledged the ongoing search activities by German and Portuguese authorities. The operation has so far cost around £13.3 million.
Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance last month, emphasizing their continued resolve to find answers.
Background
On the night Madeleine disappeared, her parents were dining with friends nearby while Madeleine and her younger twin siblings slept in their ground-floor apartment. Kate McCann discovered Madeleine was missing around 10:00 PM.
A 2022 German documentary revealed Brückner had occasionally worked as a handyman at the Ocean Club, with prosecutors linking his phone data and vehicle transactions to the case.
