Ahmedabad, India – June 15, 2025
Doctors in India have confirmed that 270 bodies have been recovered from the scene of a catastrophic plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The aircraft, which was bound for London, went down just moments after take-off, slamming into a residential building and killing all but one of the 242 passengers on board.
Authorities identified the sole survivor as a 40-year-old British man, who remains in critical condition but stable. The crash has led to an outpouring of grief and vigils across both India and the United Kingdom, as families await confirmation of their loved ones’ fates.
DNA Matching Delays Identification
The process of identifying the deceased continues to be painstakingly slow. Officials have been collecting and analyzing DNA samples from the crash site to help confirm the identities of those killed in the tragedy. It is still unclear how many people were killed on the ground, as the plane crashed into a building used as doctors’ accommodation at the BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital.
Dr. Dhaval Gameti, President of the Junior Doctors’ Association at the hospital, confirmed that the institution had received 270 bodies by Saturday afternoon.
International Investigation Launched
The crash is being investigated by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), with support from experts from the United States and the United Kingdom. On Friday, investigators located the aircraft’s black box, which authorities say will be critical in determining what caused the sudden and tragic descent.
According to preliminary reports, the aircraft lost altitude less than a minute after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It then crashed into the multi-storey residential building, triggering a massive fire and reducing parts of the structure to rubble.
Government Responds
India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, assured the public that all necessary resources were being directed toward the investigation and relief efforts. “The black box will significantly aid the inquiry,” he said, promising transparency and timely updates as the investigation unfolds.
Global Mourning
The tragedy has struck a deep chord internationally, especially given the number of British nationals reportedly on board. Candlelight vigils and memorial services have been held in London, Delhi, and Ahmedabad, as families, friends, and citizens mourn the devastating loss of life.
The UK government has confirmed its cooperation with Indian authorities and has sent forensic teams to assist in victim identification and support for British nationals affected by the crash.
