George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the long-running US sitcom Cheers, has died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76, his family confirmed Tuesday.
Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers from 1982 to 1993, earning six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His portrayal of the affable bar regular Norm became a fan favorite and a symbol of comfort and camaraderie.
Tributes have poured in from his Cheers co-stars and fans alike. Ted Danson, who played bar owner Sam Malone, expressed his devastation, saying, “I love you, Georgie. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this.” Kelsey Grammer, known for his role as Frasier Crane, called Wendt “beloved by millions” while respecting the family’s privacy in mourning.
Rhea Perlman described Wendt as “the sweetest, kindest man I ever met” and said she would miss him deeply. John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin, shared heartfelt memories of their friendship and working together on the iconic show.
Wendt’s impact extended beyond television. He appeared in films such as Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho, and featured in Michael Jackson’s 1991 music video for “Black or White.” Married to fellow actor Bernadette Birkett since 1978, Wendt was a devoted family man with three children. He was also the uncle of actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis.
Norm Peterson’s signature entrance, greeted by cheers from the bar’s patrons, became a beloved running gag and a cultural touchstone. The Boston pub that inspired Cheers honored Wendt by sharing a photo of Norm’s usual stool with a touching tribute on Instagram: “George wasn’t just an actor – he was a symbol of comfort, laughter, and that familiar feeling of walking into a place where everybody knows your name.”
As the entertainment world mourns the loss of George Wendt, his legacy of warmth, humor, and unforgettable moments on screen will continue to resonate with fans old and new.
