Hundreds Arrested in Paris After PSG’s Champions League Win Sparks Unrest

Paris, France – Wild celebrations in Paris following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) historic UEFA Champions League victory turned chaotic late Saturday night, with nearly 300 people arrested amid violent clashes between fans and police.

PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich to win their first-ever Champions League title. The victory ignited massive street celebrations across the French capital, particularly around the Champs-Elysées and PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where nearly 50,000 fans had gathered to watch the final on big screens.

While most fans celebrated peacefully—singing, dancing, and waving PSG flags—others engaged in destructive acts. Paris police reported that flares and fireworks were launched, cars were set ablaze, and several bus shelters were vandalized.

Social media footage, which has not been verified, appeared to show crowds attempting to loot stores including Chanel and Foot Locker along the Champs-Elysées. Riot police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse aggressive crowds and prevent them from reaching the Arc de Triomphe.

Massive Police Presence
Authorities had deployed approximately 5,400 officers across Paris in anticipation of unrest. According to a police statement, “Troublemakers on the Champs-Élysées were looking to create incidents and repeatedly came into contact with police by throwing large fireworks and other objects.”

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the violence, stating, “True PSG supporters are enjoying their team’s magnificent match. Meanwhile, barbarians have taken to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke the police.”

Outside the Capital
In a separate incident in Grenoble, southeastern France, a car struck PSG fans, injuring four members of the same family, two of whom sustained serious injuries. Authorities said the driver turned himself in and was arrested. Initial investigations suggest the incident was not intentional.

City Prepares for Victory Parade
The Eiffel Tower was illuminated in PSG’s blue and red colors following the win, and French President Emmanuel Macron, a noted Olympique de Marseille fan, congratulated the team on X (formerly Twitter): “A glorious day for PSG! Bravo, we are all proud. Paris, the capital of Europe this evening.”

A victory parade is scheduled for Sunday on the Champs-Elysées, where tens of thousands of fans are expected. Macron’s office confirmed that the president will host the players at the Élysée Palace for an official celebration.
