Ali Shamkhani, a senior Iranian political and military figure and close aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was initially reported killed during Israel’s recent Operation Rising Lion attacks on Iran. However, Iranian state media later clarified that Shamkhani was “severely injured and hospitalized” but remains alive.

Shamkhani Signals Continued Defiance

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Shamkhani emphasized that despite the US and Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, “the game is not over.” He stated that Iran’s “enriched materials,” “indigenous knowledge,” and “political will remain,” warning that “surprises will continue.”

The post came after conflicting reports surrounding his fate following the June 13 Israeli strikes, which marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Conflicting Reports About His Condition

Earlier, Israeli and Iranian media outlets claimed Shamkhani was killed during the strikes, which also reportedly claimed the lives of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including the head of the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the commander of its air force.

However, last Friday Iranian news agencies such as IRNA, Tasnim, and Fars issued statements that Shamkhani was alive but “severely injured” and currently in stable condition. Despite these reports, no new images of Shamkhani have been released to the public.

In another post on Saturday, Shamkhani wrote: “My fate to survive wounded,” expressing his commitment to Iran with the words, “I’d sacrifice myself a hundred times for Iran.”

Who Is Ali Shamkhani?

Shamkhani is a prominent figure in Iranian politics and security. He has served as Iran’s top national security official for a decade starting in 2013 and has held significant roles within the IRGC and the Ministry of Defense. Known for his diplomatic skills, Shamkhani was a key representative for Tehran during historic talks that restored diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia.

Widely regarded as a rising star in Iranian diplomacy, Shamkhani is well-known in Western foreign-policy circles, particularly in Washington and Europe. Just last April, prior to negotiations with the United States, he warned that Iran might expel UN nuclear inspectors and halt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if Tehran felt threatened.

Outlook

Shamkhani’s survival and recent statements underscore Tehran’s resilience amid escalating military and diplomatic pressures. His warnings suggest Iran may continue to pursue its nuclear ambitions and resist external demands despite the mounting strikes on its infrastructure.

The situation remains fluid as tensions in the region heighten, and the international community watches closely for further developments.
