Kosher Restaurant Owner in Greater Manchester Responds to Antisemitic Graffiti with Message of Unity

Prestwich, Greater Manchester — The co-owner of Benny’s Bistro, a kosher restaurant in Prestwich, has spoken out following two incidents of antisemitic graffiti defacing his business. Nissen Lewis, who runs the bistro on Old Bury Road, expressed both hurt and determination to “fight the hate with love” after the messages appeared on the wall outside the restaurant in late April and again over the weekend.

Lewis reported both incidents to Greater Manchester Police, which is investigating the graffiti as “racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage.” The force has deployed extra officers to the area and asked the public to come forward with any CCTV or dashcam footage.

Despite the distress caused by the attacks, Lewis highlighted the positive community response. Supporters, including local residents and even young children, left signs and messages of solidarity on the affected wall. Lewis was also touched by a postcard from a former Prestwich resident now living in Orkney, which he described as “beautiful” and uplifting.

“This is about love for the community,” Lewis said. “We love Jews, Christians, and Muslims — all should live side by side in harmony.”

He noted the multicultural nature of the neighborhood, pointing out the proximity of a mosque, synagogue, and church around the restaurant. “We provide food to the community, welcoming everyone — non-Jews, Muslims, and Jews alike,” Lewis said.

Lewis also called on the police to take the incidents seriously to send a clear message that hate crimes will not be tolerated and to prevent any further escalation. “If people think they can get away with this, it could lead to targeting others who are more vulnerable,” he warned.

Greater Manchester Police continues its investigation as the community rallies behind Lewis and his message of unity.
