KYIV, Ukraine — Russia launched one of its largest drone assaults on Ukraine overnight, targeting multiple regions and leaving a trail of destruction across the capital Kyiv and the southern port city of Odesa.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that 315 drones were deployed by Russia across the country during the strikes. At least four people were injured in Kyiv, and two people were killed in Odesa. Thirteen others were reported injured, including patients and staff at a medical facility.
Widespread Damage in Kyiv
Officials confirmed that seven out of Kyiv’s ten districts suffered damage during the attack. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as explosions rocked the capital and debris from intercepted drones fell on residential buildings and warehouses.
“The massive attack on the capital continues,” Klitschko warned on Telegram.
Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, described the assault as “simultaneous” across districts, igniting fires and terrifying residents.
“The city was terrorised. It was a difficult night for all of us,” he said.
Civilian Targets Hit in Odesa
In Odesa, Governor Oleh Kiper confirmed that residential buildings and critical medical infrastructure—including a maternity ward—were struck by drones. Two civilians were killed, and 13 others sustained injuries. Emergency crews evacuated patients and staff from affected facilities.
Images shared by local authorities showed residential buildings engulfed in flames as emergency responders battled the aftermath of the strikes.
North Korean Missiles Allegedly Used
President Zelensky claimed that among the seven missiles launched, two were ballistic missiles “of North Korean production.” He condemned Russia’s continued assault during what he described as a time when “a ceasefire should be in place.”
“These were some of the largest strikes on Kyiv,” Zelensky stated on social media.
Ukrainian Counterattacks and Prisoner Swap
Ukraine also responded with drone attacks targeting Russian air bases overnight. Several Russian airports were forced to temporarily close.
These attacks come on the heels of a covert Ukrainian operation—dubbed “Operation Spider’s Web”—on June 1, which targeted Russian military airfields deep inside Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed a strong retaliation in a recent conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has initiated a multi-stage prisoner exchange, which includes the return of sick or injured prisoners of war, those under 25, and the remains of approximately 12,000 soldiers.
Zelensky acknowledged the sensitivity of the exchange, describing it as a “complicated process with many delicate details.”
War Enters Third Year
The ongoing conflict began in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, millions have been displaced, and thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed. Drone warfare, missile strikes, and counter-offensives continue to define the war’s evolving frontlines.
