Three Dead, Six Injured in Stampede at Festival in Eastern India

BlogHear.com – June 29, 2025 — A tragic stampede during a large Hindu festival in eastern India resulted in the deaths of three people and left six others injured, officials confirmed Sunday.

The incident occurred at dawn during an annual chariot festival in Puri, Odisha, where thousands of devotees had gathered to participate in the religious event. According to Y.B. Khurania, director general of police in Odisha, while three people lost their lives, the six injured sustained non-life-threatening wounds and are currently out of danger.

The cause of the stampede is still under investigation, but large crowds and limited space often contribute to such accidents during mass religious gatherings in India. A senior administrative officer who declined to be named due to protocol confirmed the details to Reuters.

Stampedes at Hindu festivals are not uncommon in India, the world’s most populous country, where millions participate in rituals and celebrations. Earlier this year, a pre-dawn stampede during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj claimed at least 39 lives.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols during large events to prevent further tragedies.
