DOHA, QATAR —
US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that Iran has “sort of” agreed to the terms of a nuclear deal with the United States, raising hopes that a military strike on Tehran’s nuclear sites might be avoided.
Speaking during the second stop of his Gulf tour in Doha, Trump described the recent negotiations between the two countries as “very serious” and aimed at securing “long-term peace.” The latest round of talks concluded on Sunday, with both sides agreeing to continue discussions in the near future.
Progress in Nuclear Talks
Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, saying:
“We’re not going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran. I think we’re getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this.”
He did not specify which particular comments he referred to but indicated the talks were moving in a positive direction.
An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Shamkhani, also confirmed Iran’s willingness to make concessions. In an interview with ABC News, Shamkhani said Tehran was prepared to accept significant curbs on its nuclear program, including the relinquishment of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions.
Background on the Nuclear Dispute
The US has maintained that Iran must cease uranium enrichment activities to prevent the development of nuclear weapons. Iran, however, insists its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018, citing concerns over Iran’s activities. Since April, new talks have resumed in an effort to revive or renegotiate a deal.
Official Reactions
US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff described the recent negotiations as “encouraging,” while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called them “difficult but useful.”
A senior US official said the latest discussions, which lasted more than three hours, resulted in an agreement to continue addressing technical issues.
“We are encouraged by today’s outcome and look forward to our next meeting, which will happen in the near future,” the official added.
Outlook
With both sides signaling a willingness to compromise, the prospect of a renewed nuclear agreement appears more attainable. However, substantial technical details remain to be worked out before a final deal can be reached.
