Kyiv, Ukraine — May 11, 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a measured response to Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s late-night offer of direct peace talks in Istanbul, scheduled for next Thursday.
In a post on X, Zelensky called Putin’s move “a positive sign that the Russians have finally begun to consider ending the war,” stopping short of endorsing the proposal outright. The Ukrainian leader added that Kyiv expects Moscow to confirm its commitment to the 30-day unconditional ceasefire, proposed to begin Monday and backed by Western leaders.
Optics Over Optimism
Despite the apparent openness to talks, political observers suggest Zelensky’s tone reflects a desire not to appear as the barrier to peace, especially in the eyes of U.S. President Donald Trump, who initiated the 30-day ceasefire proposal and has recently intensified efforts to broker an end to the conflict.
Trump responded positively on Truth Social, calling it “a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine“, further indicating his belief that peace may be within reach.
Putin’s Strategic Messaging
In his statement, Putin said he wants to address “the root causes of the conflict,” citing Ukraine’s desire to align with Europe and join NATO as unacceptable to Moscow. The Kremlin insists Ukraine should remain in Russia’s sphere of influence, much like Belarus.
However, Russia also made clear on Saturday that a ceasefire can only proceed if the West halts military aid to Ukraine — a condition seen by Kyiv and its allies as deeply problematic.
Ukraine Faces Escalating Threats

Meanwhile, Russian drone and missile attacks continue across Ukraine. On Sunday morning, air raid sirens once again rang out across Kyiv as Russia launched another wave of drone strikes.
Ukrainian officials have stressed the importance of continued Western support, particularly air defense systems, to protect major cities and critical infrastructure.
One major concern is the possible use of Russia’s Oreshnik hypersonic missile, which can reportedly travel at ten times the speed of sound. The last known strike using this missile occurred in Dnipro in late 2024.
What Will Trump Do Next?
As the situation unfolds, attention now turns to Trump. His next move could shape the outcome of the proposed peace talks. Some analysts believe he may pressure Moscow to accept the ceasefire terms. Others suggest he could lean toward urging Ukraine to enter talks in Istanbul regardless of Russia’s military posture.
Whether peace is genuinely on the horizon or this is another standoff masked as diplomacy remains to be seen.
