Kyiv, Ukraine – May 10, 2025 — UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has arrived in Ukraine alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to push for a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing war with Russia.
The three leaders traveled to Kyiv by train and were joined by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Their visit marks a significant show of unity, coming just one day after over 20 global leaders appeared with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for Victory Day commemorations.
Sir Keir’s visit to Ukraine is his second since becoming prime minister. The coordinated trip is aimed at urging Russia to accept the ceasefire proposal originally put forward by US President Donald Trump.
The leaders stated their intention to “ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine” and stressed the need for an enduring peace. On Saturday morning, they visited Kyiv’s Independence Square to honor Ukrainian soldiers who have died since the full-scale Russian invasion began more than three years ago.
They later joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing” – a group of about 30 mostly European nations working to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term security.
In a joint statement, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, and the UK declared:
“We stand in Kyiv in solidarity with Ukraine against Russia’s barbaric and illegal full-scale invasion.
We support President Trump’s call for a peace deal and urge Russia to agree to a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
Until Russia complies, we will continue to increase pressure and support Ukraine’s sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders.”
The visit comes as Russia’s self-declared three-day ceasefire to mark Victory Day draws to a close. Ukrainian officials have dismissed the truce as a “theatrical show,” accusing Russia of continuing its military operations. Russia, in turn, claims it has adhered to the ceasefire and has blamed Ukraine for violations.
German Chancellor Merz expressed hope that a full 30-day ceasefire could be agreed by the weekend, stating that the “ball is now entirely in Moscow’s court.”
Meanwhile, President Trump reaffirmed the ceasefire call following a phone conversation with President Zelensky. He warned that failure to comply would lead to further sanctions from the US and its partners.
As the diplomatic effort intensifies, the world watches closely to see if Russia will agree to step back and allow room for negotiations toward a just and lasting peace.
